trees associates has extensive experience in the design & rejuvenation of small-scale, communally-used, private and public spaces. This may involve private garden squares, pocket parks, sculpture parks or streetscapes.
A rejuvenated and sustainable pocket park supported by the local community can be a welcome solution for Councils with few resources, especially if they are problem spaces with frequent ASB (antisocial behaviour) issues.. To achieve a sustainable solution requires time and detailed studies of the local character, amenities, residents, facilities, access and transport. Extensive community engagement through workshops and event days provide a forum for the community and the space for a scheme to emerge. Careful choice of plants provides both cultural significance and have the ability to attract, involve and bond communities. Grant aid funding is essential throughout this process and an integral part of our work.
Many of the consultation techniques employed for public spaces may also be used for private spaces. Communal gardens around apartments and houses have greater control over access so ASB issues are not as relevant. The main issues for private spaces is to update designs to reflect a wider ownership, a varying community and changing use.
